Knowledge, Aptitude and Extent of Utilization of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) among Agricultural Students in Haryana

Abstract

Globally to improve teaching and learning in educational institutions investment in ICT have been initiated by Governments. Despite all these investments on ICT infrastructure, equipment and professional development to improve education in many countries, the adoption and integration of ICT in teaching and learning have so far been limited. Considering the importance of ICT in higher education, a study was carried out to assess the knowledge, aptitude and extent of utilization of ICT tools among the students of Chaudhary Charan Singh (CCS) Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar. The data were collected from 200 respondents using structured interview schedule and analyzed using standard methodology. Findings revealed that almost half of the students (48.50%) had medium level of knowledge with 61.00 per cent of them had favorable aptitude and medium level of extent of utilization of selected ICT tools (43.00%).Hence, concerted efforts viz; formal education of ICT gadgets, easy access and usage, cost effective measures, etc. should be made by the policy makers, administrators and authorities concerned to make necessary improvement in planning and implementing ICTs strategies, so that university students must be made aware about its use and stimulate interest among them for its optimum academic and professional use. Study also revealed that age, education, medium of schooling, schooling, family education, scientism, mass media exposure, job preference, information seeking behavior and risk orientation were found to be exhibited positive and significant correlation at 0.05 level of probability with their knowledge, aptitude and extent of utilization of selected ICT tools. Thus, it could be concluded that, by utilizing the highly favorable aptitude towards ICTs, the knowledge level of the students may be increased by providing training; as a result the extent of utilization of selected ICT tools could be increased.
