Abstract

The Sundarban areas of South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal is vulnerable to frequent climatic aberrations resulting into unsettled livelihood both for island and adjoining mainland villagers. The situation has further aggravated with the absence of any development in the area like drainage facility, proper embankment, introduction of appropriate livelihood option for the islanders etc. The dwellers are to continuously try for suitable farming option for their very sustenance. Bongheri village in Kultali block of South 24 Parganas district is one such village having population of 513 numbers and 10.8 ha of cultivable area has been purposively selected under the project entitled ‘National Initiative on Climate Resilient Agriculture’ (NICRA) launched by ICAR in the recent past to provide a way-out to counter the unforeseen climatic aberrations through scientific innovations blended with indigenous knowledge of the village people. The interventions identified like land shaping and rainwater harvesting, raising of land embankment, introduction of cotton, ornamental pisciculture and dual purpose poultry breed rearing have started showing promising changes both in the economic condition of the villagers and reduction in migration rate
