Decision Making Pattern and Economic Motivation of Women Dairy Farmers of Rajasthan- A Gender Perspective

Abstract

The present study was conducted in Alwar and Bikaner district of Rajasthan. A multistage sampling technique was employed for the study. Samples were collected from 12 villages of 6 blocks of both the districts. A total of 240 respondents (120 male and 120 female) were selected from these villages. The information was collected by conducting personal interviews of the respondents with the help of semi structured interview schedule. The pooled results showed that among majority of households decisions regarding economic activities i.e. borrowing (75.00%), lending (80.33%) and investment (86.67%) in livestock farming were taken by male respondents as compared to female respondents. Majority of male respondents took decisions regarding various breeding activities viz. selection of animals (68.33%), Artificial Insemination (82.50%), natural service (80.00%) and pregnancy diagnosis (75.00%) as compared to female respondents. The participation of women in decision making regarding health care activities was also quite low. But the participation of female respondents in decision making regarding feeding activities i.e. feeding of concentrates (49.17%), feeding of green fodder (45.83%) and feeding of roughage (49.17%) was higher as compared to male respondents. The results revealed that the level of economic motivation was low in female respondents as compared to male respondents
