Village Based Agri-Entrepreneurship In Vegetable Nursery

Abstract

Agri-entrepreneur, 500 m2 areas was taken up in three villages. A plan of 8 vegetables i.e. cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis) var. Pusa Deepali, cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) var. Pusa Mukta, broccoli (Brassica oleracea var italica) var. Palam Vichitra, onion (Allium cepa) var. Pusa Ridhi, tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) var. Arka Rakshak, brinjal (Solanum melongena) var. Pusa Kranti , chilli (Capsicum frutescens) var. Punjab Red and papaya (Carica papaya L.) var. Pusa Nanha were used. Most of the seedlings were ready for sale after 25-35 days of sowing excepting onion (35-45 days) and papaya (60-75 days). Maximum germination of 91.56 % was recorded with cabbage followed by cauliflower (90.40%). The lowest germination of 84.85 % was with papaya followed by onion (85.95%). The onion had more number of seedlings which were significantly higher than seedlings of other vegetable crops. It was observed that April, May and June are the months where seedling requirement was very less as most of the vegetables are planted during January and February month. Only cucurbitaceous vegetables are grown whose seedlings are not required by the vegetable growers. The nursery seedlings are season and crop were made available during January, February and July onwards. The net area 500 m2 grown in rotation as per demand of seedlings become 4800 m2 seedling were required in large quantities. The seedlings production system in only 500 m2 is generated 300 man days’ job opportunities. The gross income of Rs.4,88,483/ was earned while the cost of cultivation was Rs. 1,74,437/ and 54,459/ with professional and family farming mode, respectively registering net income of Rs. 3,14,045/ and Rs. 4,34,024/ and per day income was Rs. 860 and Rs. 1189, respectively.
