Abstract

Heat stress adversely affects the efficiency of broiler production due to high environmental temperature. So to maintain the production, reproduction and economy of the farm, management requires modification of surrounding environment, ventilation system, bird density and nutritional management to reduce the heat stress in poultry. So study was conduct on comparative effect of the evaporative cooling pad and fogger systems on body weight and carcass characterstics of broiler chicks during summer in semi-arid region of Rajasthan there were one hundred eighty day old, commercial broiler chicks (VenCobb Strain) were used. The birds were randomly divided into three treatment groups i.e. T0, T1 and T2 comprising of 60 birds in each treatment which were further divided into three replications of 20 birds each. The chicks were kept in floor pens; water and feed were provided ad libitum throughout the experimental period of 42 days. The control T0 had Pen without a cooling device, while other treatment groups T1 and T2 had evaporative cooling pad and fogger systems, respectively. There were highly significant effects of using cooling devices on body weight whereas the carcass characteristics like carcass yield (%), eviscerated yield (%), thigh yield (%), drumstick yield (%), breast yield (%), heart yield (%), liver yield (%), gizzard yield (%), head yield (%), neck yield (%), shank yield (%) did not vary among treatment groups. The result of body weight was found better in T1 group as compared to the T0 and T2 groups. It is concluded that the evaporative cooling pad and fogger system ensured significantly better growth performance of broilers.
