Abstract

Animal rearing is an activity which has a significant positive impact on both society and the economy. Livestock contributes to a variety of benefits, including food security, family nutrition, household income, asset preservation, soil productivity, livelihoods, transportation, agricultural traction, agricultural diversity, sustainable agricultural production, family and community employment, ritualistic uses, and social status. Despite the growing recognition of the role of agriculture in safeguarding the social heritage of territories, their culture and traditions, the assessment of social sustainability has received less attention than that of environmental and economic sustainability. So, the present study was conducted in three districts of Haryana state to assess sustainability of livestock farming from social point of view. Data was collected from 120 respondents engaged in dairy farming and social sustainability was assessed through a set of indicators. Livestock production systems were found sustainable from dairy animals’ contribution to household income, food supply, employment, social security, food safety, satisfaction level, access to public infrastructure for livestock, distance to markets. But sustainability appears low from women empowerment, decision making autonomy, gender equality point of view. It is concluded that livestock production systems appear sustainable on social pillar. Further it is advised to promote gender equality and women empowerment by creating awareness regarding gender sensitization, by making SHGs and designing suitable women specific policies. Keywords:
