Role of mobile applications in adoption of Scientific Animal Husbandry practices in semi arid region of Uttar Pradesh

Abstract

Animal husbandry has historically been an integral part of Indian agriculture and is relevant today as a large section of society is actively engaged and dependent on it. The overall productivity of livestock sector is low in comparison to the rest of the world and to improve the productivity mainstreaming of the livestock farmers to get accesses to the information is very important. Relevant and timely update of the livestock farmer regarding scientific practices is important. The ICT tools especially mobile phones are playing crucial role meeting the information requirement of farmers. Mobile phones apps are used for wide range of purposes in area of entertainment, health, education, personality development, economic activities and household activities etc. Thus the study was conducted with the objective of studying the role of mobile applications in adoption of animal husbandry practices. Ex post facto study was conducted in purposively selected Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh with sample size of 150 people from ten villages of five blocks. The study found that most of the respondents possessed smartphones and uses it mainly for entertainment purpose (74.00%) and social networking (68.00%). Among agriculture (60.67%) and animal husbandry (55.34%) purpose of the respondents using mobile applications for information seeking. Along with this, animal husbandry practices adopted by the livestock owners using various mobile applications were also studied. Study revealed that YouTube and Google search engine is most adopted applications for feeding and management activities followed by breeding practices by the respondents. It was concluded that mobile and its applications played an eminent role in dissemination of livestock related information. So a need based, location specific and in local language application should develop for the farmers.
