Abstract

The present study was conducted through personal interview schedule to study the procurement pattern of dairy inputs and their utilization by the general and commercial dairy farmers of Punjab. The area of study was six major agro-climatic zones of Punjab such as undulating plain, sub-mountainous undulating, western plain, western region, central plain and flood prone region. each selected districts eight villages and further ten dairy farmers from each village were selected randomly. In addition to this, five commercial dairy farmers were also selected from each selected district. The dairy farmers were categorized into general and commercial dairy farmers. It was found that the procurement pattern of dairy inputs and their utilization varied among the general and commercial dairy farmers. The source of procurement for mineral mixture and feed concentrate was retailer for the general dairy farmers where as commercial dairy farmers procured the same from wholesaler as well. All the equipments by the general dairy farmers were procured from the local market whereas commercial dairy farmers procured milking machine, chiller, fans and fogger from wholesaler also. The commercial dairy farmers procured finance from bank only however, in addition to bank, general dairy farmers procured finance from commission agent, friends and relatives as well. All the commercial dairy farmers daily utilized their procured inputs. However, utilization of inputs by general dairy farmers varied from daily to yearly. Hence, general dairy farmers need to be formed into self- help groups to procure the inputs from the wholesalers as general dairy farmers procured their inputs only from local markets. Government should provide required facilities and support in effective running of dairy farming.
