Nutritional Status and Dietary Habits of Adult Women: Community Based Study in Barpeta District of Assam

Abstract

Nutrition is essential for every individual to lead a healthy life. Therefore, we must eat healthy foods to stay fit and fine. On the other hand, poor nutrition is associated with ill-health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes, osteoporosis, iron deficiency anemia, and certain cancers. Nutrients maintain our lives better by protecting us from various diseases or infections. Therefore, dietary habits of an individual should be proper. Generally we prefer fast food rather than homemade foods. We are always ready to choose spicy and salty food for minimizing hunger. We assume that food is only necessary for their survival. We never think about their physical fitness and healthy diet. Adult women are not exceptional regarding choosing of food items. They are not concern about their health , rather they keep themselves busy in taking care of their family and in laws. They are not well furnished about locally available nutritious foods. Hence, suffered from various kinds of infection mainly due to deficiency of Vit A and Vit C . By considering their health condition it was decided to conduct a study on ‘’Nutritional Status and Dietary Habits of Adult Women: Community Based study in Barpeta District of Assam‘’. A total of 120 adult women were selected purposively from Barpeta district. The findings of the study highlighted that majority of adult women had low iron level and malnourished mainly because of poor nutrients intake. They were not habitual to consume balance diet or healthy diet in their regular meal. As a result they showed various types of deficiency symptoms.
