Nutrition Gardens: A Sustainable Model For Food Security And Diversity At Anganwadi Centres In Khagaria District Of Bihar

Abstract

Nutrition -garden provides a continuous supply of valuable nutrients for the balance and nutritional diet to the beneficiaries of Anganwadi centers for proper growth, development throughout the year and reduced mortality, morbidity, malnutrition and school dropouts to increase the establishment of Nutri-gardens at the centers and community level. Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Khagaria has carried out a total of 125 demonstrations in Kharif and Rabi season in an area of 3.0 ha during the year 2019-20 to 2021-22 on Nutri gardening in Parbatta, Mansi, Alouli, Choutham, Khagaria an importance and establishment of nutri garden. The objective was to increase the availability of vegetables and nutrient intake at household level and to improve the knowledge of rural women regarding various technological aspects of nutri gardening and its importance. Data on major constraints perceived by participants in establishing nutri- garden were also collected. For the facilitate of demonstrations, families of 4-6 members were selected purposively. An area of 200 m2 was taken to establish nutri garden for each centers. An interview schedule was used to assess the pre and post training knowledge of participants regarding various aspects of Nuti gardening on survey basis. The result of the study revealed an improvement in availability and consumption of vegetables at both centers and household level after facilitate full package and practices of fruits and vegetables demonstrations units were laid. The average per capita availability of vegetables increased from 182.85 to 271.43 gm/day in Kharif where as it was increased from 212.32 to 298.97 gm/day in Rabi season.
