Managing the Adverse Impacts of Climate Change in Agriculture: A case study on NICRA Project in Purulia District of West Bengal

Abstract

In the era of climate insecurity, the challenges and many of the solutions are understood. In India where 65-70% population belongs to farming community and they are the backbone of our country. The farmers are mostly facing the climate uncertainties in case of producing and marketing. The Government of India are started NICRA-TDC project for solving this situation in 2011. Present study was conducted to know the activities carried out under the project. The descriptive research method was followed to analysis the situation. The result reflects that from 2022 in Krishi Vigyan Kendra Kalyan Purulia this project is running. For mitigating the effect of climate change in agriculture sector the project is carrying out the work on four modules e.g. i) Natural Resource Management ii) Crop Production iii) Livestock and Fisheries and iv) Instructional Intervention. In NRM module, the aim is to renovating the water bodies, excavation of field dug well, renovation of cannel etc. In crop production module, the aim is to initiate on zero tillage method of crop sowing, silvi-pastoral system of agro-forestry, introduction of drought tolerant varieties, introduction of various water saving technologies etc. In livestock and fisheries module, time bounded vaccination of poultry birds, small ruminants, and cattle, provide low-cost feed supplement and fodder production and composite fish cultivation are the main components. In institutional intervention, the creation of seed bank, fodder bank, strengthening of SHGs, custom hiring centre establishment are initialised. Consequently, it is a stepping stone to further initiate and broaden the partnerships and its activities with inclusive engagement by all stakeholders, such as the private sector, governments, scientists, non-governmental organizations, and farmers.
