Constraints Faced by Livestock Farmers Using ICT Tools During COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract

Disruptions such as COVID-19 and many more future crises are presenting threats to the food supply chain and thus affecting the livelihood of farmers. Global, local and governmental organizations are increasing the application of digital tools and introducing new innovations to provide technical assistance to farmers from a distance when traditional in-person livestock extension is impossible. Thane district has 7 blocks, out of which four blocks were randomly selected. From each block, five villages were selected and from each village, six respondents who were using ICT tools and having at least 03 milch animals at the time of study were selected randomly. Therefore, a total of 120 livestock-rearing farmers were selected for the present study. The respondents were interviewed, individually, at their homes. Statistical measures used during this study include frequency, percentage, and Cumulative square root frequency (CSRT). 60.83 per cent of respondents in the study area belonged to the medium age category. The major constraint faced by livestock farmers was a lack of information about technology (57.17%) and ranked as the first constraint. Inadequate financial and loan facilities as the second major constraint (55.36%). After this, network issue in rural area was ranked as the third constraint (51.74%). Lack of knowledge about online marketing, Non-availability of electricity, Lack of skills to use technology, Lack of knowledge, Lack of identification of proper ICT tools as information resources and Lack of availability of online market were identified as majors constraints faced by the livestock farmers during the use of ICT Tools.
