Abstract

India is the second most populous nation in the world, with highest number of young people which may seem to be a liability but can be turned into a strength by harnessing the potential of youth power for development activities. This is already recognized by our community-based organizations in creating massive cadres of human resources well trained to teach and persuade rural people in all spheres of development. Now we have auxiliary nurse maids (ANMs)and ASHAs in social health, sikhamitra in education, Aagewans in SEWA work in Gujarat, Anganwadis die child carem kisnamitras & krishisakhis in agriculture, gopalmitra & pashusakhi in animal husbandry, and matsyasakhis in fisheries. Community resource persons also work for poverty alleviation and income generation through self-help groups and micro-enterprises. Rural young women and men are identified and trained to become community resource persons to lead rural communities towards rural transformation. Now, community resource persons are categorized to serve all spheres of community development even for natural resource management, soil conservation committees, tubewell water user communities, community seed banks, fodder banks, common property resources, common grazing pasture, joint forest management, crop pest management, and participatory development initiatives. NRLM has taken initiative in bringing local community resource persons into the mainstream by creating standard operational procedures. Community resource persons enjoy trust and mutual faith with their clientele, as the CRPs are one among them, share their culture and social values. They demonstrate great empathy with their audience due to their homophily, unlike outsiders. The community resource persons (CRPs) are local and belong to their own communities. CRPs speak the local dialect and easily understood. They save time, energy and funds. They listen actively, take initiative, get along with others easily, motivate, lead and enable others, communicate persuasively. CRPs would become great assets to development program organizations.
