Assessing the Knowledge Level of Farmers about Climate Change: Evidence from Nagaland, India

Abstract

Climate is changing and it is a global issue. Various drivers are responsible for climate change. Agriculture is an important driver for climate change as well as highly vulnerable to it. This paper is an attempt to explore the farmers knowledge of climate change, mitigation and adaptation of climate change with reference to agriculture and allied sectors. Accordingly, Dimapur district, in Nagaland was selected to conduct the study. And an interview schedule was constructed to collect the data from the respondents. Personal interview of each respondent was conducted by the researchers. Altogether, 40 respondents were included under the study and 23 items/ statements were included to assets the knowledge level of respondents. Issues related to climate change, interaction between climate change and agriculture, climate change and livestock rearing and mitigation and adaptation of climate change were well emphasized during the construction of interview schedule and selection of items/statements. In this study, statistical tools like, frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, range and ranking were adopted to bring the valid conclusion. Further, knowledge index was developed to categories the respondents. It was observed that majority of the respondents were categorized under medium level of knowledge index. The mean value of knowledge Index was 52.28 with standard deviation of 17.55 and it was ranged from 4.39-82.60. Based on the study, it can be concluded that farmers knowledge level was moderate and concerned authorities may take the initiative to upscale the knowledge level of the farmers of Nagaland.
