An Assessment of Challenges Faced by Poor People in Availing the Benefits of Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana

Abstract

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana is a successful initiative taken by the Government of India for accelerating financial inclusion among poor and rural people. The Scheme is introduced to offer various banking services like the basic savings bank account, remittances facility, insurance, and pension to the unbanked population and also expand the net of financial security for the poor people. The scheme was the greatest step announced by Prime Minister on 15th August 2014 and launched this financial inclusion intervention on 28th August 2014. The present study “An Assessment of challenges faced by poor people in availing the benefits of Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana” was performed in Kanpur Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh for evaluating the issues and challenges faced by respondents in availing the benefits of the scheme. Thus, 25 respondents were selected from a bank of each of six villages of two blocks that constitutes a total of 150 respondents. The study reveals that out of total respondents, 29.3% respondents were illiterate and 60.0% of respondents had an annual income of Rs. 50,000 and above. Therefore, most respondents facing the problem of lower educational level, financial illiteracy, lack of money, and slow adaptation of technologies at the village level
