Agriculture Transformation through Farmers’ Producer Organization -A Success Story

Abstract

Agriculture is the Lifeline of all human beings. Agriculture is emerging as ever green future of all of us in general especially in rural areas. Transformation of rural areas by agriculture transformation could be achieved through the establishment of community-based organizations. Such an effort has been made by the establishment of Hungunda Horticulture Farmers’ Producer Company Limited (HHFPCL) at Sulibhavi, Hunagunda Taluk, Bagalkot District of Karnataka with the financial assistance from department of Horticulture, Government of Karnataka. It has started on 2nd July 2018with the vision to stop migration to urban areas in search of work, to uplift socio-economic status of farmers and to create sustainable and profitable agriculture ecosystem by empowering farmers and promoting collective action for social, economic and environmental development. In five years with 1000 thousand shareholders, HHFPCL covers 18 villages, 4300 ha area. Its services are to supply inputs, technical and financial guidance, marketing linkages and networking to the farmers for outputs, customer hiring center (CHC) and direct marketing. It is marketing fresh produce like chilli (green and red), turmeric, millets, cereals, pulses and also processed products like chilli powder, turmeric powder and dry raisins to the customers directly in the brand name of Jana Trupti. The net profit was 8.00 per cent during 2018-19 and 17.00 per cent in 2019-20 which indicates that HHFPCL is financially sustainable. The amount HHFPCL received in lakhs during the FY 2022-23 was Rs.102 for inputs sale, Rs.1125 for fresh produce sale, Rs.2.6 for Jana Trupti products and Rs.2.9 for CHC. One of its future plans is promotion of women membership and leadership at village level. HHFPCL has won prestigious prizes like cold chain award by Confederation of Indian Industry, Valuable contribution for Excellence in Horticulture by Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare, GOI etc.
