Abstract

Knowledge and practice level of tribal farm women regarding fruit production in seven districts of Arunachal Pradesh, namely, Papumpare, Lower Subansiri, East Siang, West Siang, West Kameng district, Namsai and Lohit were assessed before and after the conduct of an intervention programme. The pre- intervention phase was administered to 420 respondents selected through a combination of purposive and simple random sampling method. A personal interview method with the use of an interview schedule was used to access the existing knowledge and practice level of the 420 respondents. The intervention programme on scientific methods of fruit production was conducted for thirty (30) respondents. The respondents for the intervention programme were selected based on the lowest knowledge score acquired by each respondent from the district in various aspects of fruit production. Hence, East Siang (D3) was selected out of seven assessed districts. The design of the intervention programme on fruit production included lecture cum discussion and demonstration. Statistical techniques such as frequency, percentage, mean, and t-test were used for analysis and interpretation of results. The findings revealed that the mean gain in knowledge score after intervention programme was 12.07 (64.37%). The mean retention score (15.63) was more than the existing knowledge as respondents were exposed to an intervention programme on fruit production. Further, it was interesting to note that there was highly significant difference between existing knowledge score and first post exposure score (t- value = -159.03) after the respondents were exposed to the intervention programme. Significant difference between the existing practice score and the second post exposure practice score (t- value = -33.06) was observed . There was an increase in the adoption of a practice score of 10.20 (34.00%) after 30 days of the intervention programme.
