Sources of contact in improving value addition of milk: A tool of women empowerment

Abstract

Dairy farming plays an important role in social and economic livelihood of the dairy farmers. The present study was conducted in Hisar and Kurukshetra district of Haryana to study the role of sources of contact in improving value addition of milk that finally led to women empowerment. Multi-stage random sampling technique was used for selection of respondents. Two sub divisions from each district were chosen randomly using simple lottery method. Thereafter one block was selected from each sub-division and three villages were selected from each block randomly. In this way, 12 villages were selected and total ten farmers from each village were selected randomly using simple lottery method. In this way, a total of 120 dairy farmers were selected. The data were collected with the help of predesigned interview schedule by personal interview. The study indicated that about half (48.3%) of the respondents from Hisar were from medium level of mass media contact followed by 43.3 per cent from low level of mass media contact. Whereas, in case of respondents of Kurukshetra, 38.3 per cent of belonged to medium level of mass media contact and 40 per cent were from high level. Regarding the extension contact 40 per cent of respondents from Hisar having medium level of extension contact followed by 38.3 per cent and 21.7 per cent from low and high level of extension contact category while, 40 per cent, 38.3 per cent and 21.7 per cent of the respondents from Kurukshetra having low, medium and high level of extension contact. The higher percent of value addition was reported in the district where higher per centage of extension contact was reported.
